Description
Set in the New Mexico territory of the early 1880’s, Miss Deal chronicles the relationship between a cattle rancher, Joshua Fox, and Caslyn O’Dell, a young woman running from a powerful New Orleans family convinced of her guilt in the murder of the family patriarch. Caslyn matured in the gambling culture of the Mississippi River and is a professional card dealer, with expert knife handling as her signature. Her skills are the equal of Joshua’s marksmanship, he having been trained to be a sniper as a young man in the Civil War.
Their encounter is not by chance as revealed in a series of flashbacks throughout the writing. The book begins with the young woman searching for a hero, the quest threatened by a near-fatal gunshot wound. Joshua saves her life twice bringing the reader to the final chapters and a heart wrenching event from which only Caslyn can save Joshua.
Twenty-seven chapters in length, this novel would best be considered as a western romance. Archetypical of westerns, it contains violent scenes but the descriptions avoid sensationalism. Delicate subjects are handled delicately, the writing kept simple and non-graphic. While not overtly religious in nature, Miss Deal offers lead male characters who are God-fearing men, providing good examples for younger readers. Caslyn, trying to survive in the wild west, searches for her moral center despite 'years of the devil courting her favor.’
